Do Injectable Treatments Hurt? What They Really Feel Like

The truth is, every treatment feels a little different. Some are over before you know it, some involve a little more pressure than others, and certain areas of the face are naturally more sensitive.
The thing I hear most often afterwards, though, is, "Oh... that really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be."
So I thought I'd talk you through what the most common injectable treatments actually feel like, so you know exactly what to expect.
Does Botox Hurt?
This is probably the treatment that surprises people the most because it's usually much quicker than they expect.
The injections themselves feel like a tiny pinprick or a quick scratch on the skin. Most areas only take a couple of seconds, and because such a small amount is being injected, there isn't much pressure afterwards either.
One thing clients often ask is whether they'll feel the treatment working afterwards. Not straight away. Over the next few days, some people notice their forehead feels slightly different when they try to frown or raise their eyebrows, almost as though the muscles are becoming a little less active. It shouldn't feel heavy or uncomfortable, just different while you get used to it.
It's actually very common for clients to say, "I can't believe that was it!" because the anticipation is usually far worse than the treatment itself.
What Does Dermal Filler Feel Like?
Filler feels slightly different because you're not only feeling the tiny needle, you're also aware of the product being placed beneath the skin.
Most people describe it as a feeling of pressure or fullness rather than pain. The sensation only lasts a few seconds while the filler is being injected, and then it passes.
Different areas feel different too.
The lips are naturally one of the most sensitive areas because they contain lots of nerve endings, which is why we use a prescription strength numbing cream beforehand. Even then, many clients tell me it feels more strange than painful!
Cheeks and chin tend to feel much easier. You might notice a little pressure while the filler is placed, but they're generally much less sensitive than people expect.
Afterwards, the area can feel a little firm or tender for a few days while everything settles. That's completely normal, and most clients stop noticing it surprisingly quickly.
What Do Skin Boosters Feel Like?
Skin boosters are a little different again because they're placed much more superficially into the skin using a series of tiny injections.
Most clients describe each one as a little scratch or a quick sting that lasts a second or two. Because there are several injections across the treatment area, it can feel a little repetitive, but not particularly painful. We can always break as often as needed too.
After treatment, your skin might feel slightly tight, almost like you've had a really intensive facial. Depending on which skin booster you've had, you may also notice tiny bumps where the product has been placed. They're completely normal and usually settle over the next day or two as the product disperses.
What Does Sculptra Feel Like?
Sculptra is a little different again because it's a collagen stimulating treatment rather than a traditional filler.
Most people tell me they mainly notice a feeling of gentle pressure while the treatment is being carried out, rather than anything sharp. Because it's placed across a larger area, it tends to feel quite smooth during treatment.
Immediately afterwards, the area can feel a little fuller than expected, but that's actually down to the sterile water used to prepare the product. That fullness settles within a day or two, and then Sculptra gets to work encouraging your own collagen production over the following weeks and months.
I think that's one of the things I love most about it… the results don't appear overnight! They develop gradually, which is exactly why they look so natural.
What If I'm Nervous About Needles?
Honestly, you'd be in very good company.
Lots of my clients tell me they're nervous before their first appointment. Some don't like needles at all, while others are simply anxious because they don't know what to expect.
As a nurse, I've spent years looking after people who feel nervous around needles, so making you feel comfortable is just as important to me as the treatment itself.
We'll always talk everything through before we start, answer any questions you have, and there's never any pressure to rush. If you need a few extra minutes, that's absolutely fine.
Sometimes just knowing what to expect is enough to take away most of the worry.
What's Usually the Most Uncomfortable Part About Aesthetic Treatments?
If I'm honest... it's often the anticipation.
Most clients spend far longer worrying about the appointment than they do actually having the treatment.
Once they know what each sensation feels like, they often say they wish they'd stopped worrying sooner.
That doesn't mean injectable treatments are completely sensation free, and I'd never pretend they are. But they're usually much more manageable than people imagine.
